How Much Does it Really Cost to Start Rug Tufting
Listen you have been considering taking up rug tufting as a hobby or even a profession, However you may be wonder  might be how much is it really going to cost to get started. Trust us you are at the right spot at the right time. We have all seen the YouTube videos, tiktoks ect. As a professional rug tufter instructor, I can tell you that the initial investment can range between $300 to $500. The price range will vary depending on the the type of supplies the price tag can go beyond $500 if you decide to jump all the way in and get pro tools.  Though I always say you need to crawl before you walk  when it comes to pro tools.  Get your feet wet then scale up would be the best advice I an give any newbie. Mimi and I we took the time to sit down and write out these details for yall, we'll break down that cost and examine the various items you'll need to begin your tufting journey.
  1. AK1 Tufting Gun $200

The first and most essential item you'll need is an AK1 Tufting Gun. This tool is responsible for creating the loops and cuts that form your rug's design.  Prices for an AK1 Tufting Gun these are what we recommend for beginners. Pros alike use them as well number one it is so light I promise you don’t want to start with a heavy gun. Later when doing other things all newbies should start with a AK1 cut-pile gun. Yes there are two and one products out there however if your going to do get the machine design for what you want. Cut Pile are much easier to understand. There is also a AK1 Loop machine gun which i still recommend if your going to do cut pile then do a cut pile gun if your going to do a loop pile and then do a dedicated loop pile gun. , depending on the brand and model you select. Here at Rugs X Mi your american supplier we sell both Cut  Pile and Loop pile guns  for affordable pricing.  When you purchase a gun from our store we give you free access to our Virtual tuft camp the most extensive virtual tufting camp on the U.S. Market.

  1. Frame - $30

Creating a frame is so easy you do not need to go out and buy a frame with simple tools you can build any size frame you want it  will be heavy duty and secure, you'll need a sturdy frame. Creating a simple frame requires four 2x4 pieces of lumber. This should cost you around $10 to $20. The basic tools you need is a power drill. Your local home depot or lowes will cut the  2x4 for you . You can easily find lumber at your local hardware store. As long as you got some screws its literally that easy. In our virtual tuft camp we show you step by step how to build your tufting frame.

3. Primary Tufting Cloth 30x30 piece 14.99

The primary tufting cloth is what your going to apply your yarn to there are three types to choose from  Burlap ( which is garbage in my opinion) its something I would never sell to a customer at all or even give as a gift. Burlap is cheap however and can work on an extreme low budget however it tears very easy and is not beginner friendly. Next you have months cloths you 100% monks cloth which is ok  however the stands tend to get in . Then you have the Blended Primary Tufting Cloth these are the 70% percent polyester and 30% cotton which are very good as well they are a little lower than primary tufting cloth and will run about 8.99-15.99 / yard then your going to have 100% primary tufting cloth which is 100%  polyester and its has 14 wefts and  It's essential to choose a material that's strong enough to hold the loops and cuts in place. The primary tufting cloth typically costs between $20 and $50, depending on the size and quality of the fabric you choose

4. Yarn- $30

As a beginner, we recommend starting with Red Heart yarn, which can be found at your amazon, walmart,. Yarn prices can vary greatly cause there are different types of yars such as cotton, wool, and acrylic. We recommend all beginners to start with 4ply acrylic yarn. If your wondering how much are you going to spend well expect to spend around $20 to $50 on an adequate amount of yarn for your first project.  Just know the bigger the frame the more yarn but on a 30x30 frame which is like a 2ft project  pick something that doesn’t require a lot of color. Baby Steps you have to crawl before you walk As you progress, you may want to explore other brands and types of yarn to find the perfect fit for your designs

4.Rug Backing or Grey Felt/  Glue  12.99 backing 21.99 for a quart of rug glue

Now  as you see were adding up the cost just to start but now were headed to the things you need at the end of your project. Which is backing fabric. There are all types of backing Grey Felt  which you can get at Joanns, hobby lobby we get the 72 inches wide one.
